Join our Maker in Residence, Sarah Le Breton, for her first demonstration of the season.
Demonstrating skeined willow basketry offers the opportunity for Sarah to showcase this endangered craft skill. Willow rods are split and shaved into fine ribbons that are then woven in intricate patterns. Most prevalent in the late 19th Century, due to the skills required and the time taken to complete it is thought that willow skeining for both basketry and chair seating was only used for high-end products. Sarah is developing her use of skeined willow within her making, currently exploring this in her latest artistic basketry work and undertaking antique basket repairs. It is her ambition to advance her skillset through to creating skeined willow chair seating and fine skeined basketry work.
Come along and meet Sarah and find out more about her work and here residency here at Kelmscott.
